2007 MDA Update & Schedule of Events
2007 MDA UPDATE
Hello Everyone,
It is unbelievable that the month of May is here. I assure you that MDA activities are being planned for this year and some have already started at the first of the year. In February I represented our local at the IAFF/ MDA Boot Camp held in Charlotte. This event focused on improving the IAFF Locals and the MDA District Offices relationship. This two day conference allowed me to meet the National Ambassador for MDA Luke Christie, David Anders (PFFPNC President), Kim VanSant (Fort Lauderdale Firefighter), Bruce Stevens (Charlotte Fire Captain diagnosed with MD), many of the MDA representatives, and of course our own MDA Greensboro Office Staff. Through the break out sessions with the MDA Greensboro Staff we came to a understanding that Local 682’s relationship with our representatives in Greensboro is very good. With everyone’s support and commitment to do whatever it takes to raise money for MD research and treatment, this year will be a success. The MDA Greensboro staff is very committed in doing what ever it takes to make this relationship better in months to come.
The one suggestion that I had to improve this relationship was better advance planning and letting our local know of their needs for various MDA events. The Greensboro Office responded with an agreement that they would get the information to us concerning their events. I feel that we as a local need to make an effort in helping them with their fund raising events this year. Just a reminder that the MDA Greensboro Staff helped us at the fair booth this past year by staffing the booth with everyone in the office, so we see their commitment. How about our commitment in helping them? MDA depends on VOLUNTEERS. If no volunteers show up to help, they will hire a temporary hiring agency to assist them. By hiring the temporary workers the total funds raised is reduced by paying these folks and if the funds are reduced, than this affects MDA research and the kids. I challenge everyone to help with Fill the Boot but also help at other MDA events.
Mark your calendars and make plans to attend the MDA events this summer. Once you mark it on your calendar go ahead and commit to be there by emailing me or via cell phone.
